Aspirall and the Social Model of disability

Until recently most people assumed that disabled people couldn’t participate in society because of their impairments. Unfairly, this traditional approach defined every disabled person as a ‘problem’, making people personally responsible for the difficulties they encountered trying to live a ‘normal’ life.

The Social Model of Disability was developed by disabled people in response to this misguided attitude.  In complete contrast, the Social Model reveals that problems actually arise because of how society is organised and the way it treats disabled people. Society has put in place a load of cultural and structural barriers, disabling policies and a benefit system that creates and maintains dependency. We believe that by actively working within the Social Model, we encourage the cultural changes needed to make Society a fairer place for disabled people.

Aspirall see the Social Model of Disability as our guiding principle. So, while we appreciate that you have important impairment-related needs, we understand that they’re just the basics. Because we train our PAs in real houses rather than hospitals your physical needs will be met smoothly, without fuss, by your Aspirall Personal Assistant. You are much more than your impairment. So we focus the bulk of our energy on your aspirations. We identify the barriers that stand in the way of your independent living, potential and ambitions. Then we help you break through them.
